Norma Winstone Distances Glauco Venier Klaus Gesing - ECM 2028

Norma Winstone, England’s finest jazz vocalist, returns with a trio featuring German reedman Klaus Gesing and Italian pianist Glauco Venier (both of whom make their ECM debuts here) and a superb programme that takes in songs from Cole Porter to Peter Gabriel, a free calypso, a tribute to Coltrane, adaptations of Satie, folk songs, Pasolini and more and flows like an extended suite. Winstone’s lyrics reveal a real poetic sensibility, and both Gesing and Venier are fine jazz composers who put their considerable instrumental skills in the service of the songs. The result: a unique and special group language and one of the season’s outstanding recordings. (taken from the ECM website)

Chamber Music - Universal/Emarcy 2004

Norma Winstone (voc), Klaus Gesing (sax; bass cl), Glauco Venier (p)

"Right now, she is at the peak of her form ...there is no jazz singer in the country to touch her." The Times

Star of the international jazz world, Norma Winstone, has recently recorded the new album `Chamber Music' on the prestigious Universal label. The trio with the German saxophonist and clarinettist Klaus Gesing and the Italian born Pianist Glauco Venier plays almost exclusively original compositions of the members of the band, underlined with beautiful words by Norma Winstone.

They create a sense of intimacy and chamber music-like intensity, being introspective without losing the awareness of the 'outside'.

European jazz at its very best, avoiding the air of'art' in favour of a more honest and fulfilling listening experience.

First Booke of Songes - ATS 2000

Klaus Gesing, Glauco Venier, Salvatore Maiore, Roberto Dani
ATS-Records

I was always strongly attracted to folk-music, for it speaks in beautiful, clear words about the present and the past of the men and women that play and sing it, as well as the story of the place they live in.

feeling personally rather deprived of a strong musical heritage positively connected to my place of birth, I think this recording is about recovering a little piece of folk-music for myself - for its songes surely speak about the places I've been to and my past and present- and with this also a sense of home and integrity, if only in a metaphorical and fairly abstract way. Klaus Gesing

this is my only work, that concentrates on standards alone. I'm still very happy about this recording- it sounds so fresh, and the spirit of that evening was fantastic!

Play Bach - Extraplatte 2002

Klaus Gesing & Glauco Venier

This is a very beautiful recording of well-known tunes by johann sebastian bach, which I like to listen to, because we tried to be very respectful to the spirit of his music, and got some beautiful impsovisations inside.

'I am quite often a guest on other people´s recordings. But rarely do I feel myself so comfortable and at home as on this recording. I like Glauco´s Music very much, and I enjoyed playing with this group of musicians.'

Gesing/Rennert/Herbert/ create their music within a free improvised open space. No fear of creating lines and melodies. Using their experience in all different areas of composing and playing music, Gesing/Herbert/Rennert/ create their compositions instantaneously. Each of them contributes his own sound and vocabulary to evoke a visionary kind of music, in which fantasy, creation and 'lust' play the main roles.

harmoniX - ATS 1989

DiLiberto Gesing Quartet

'This is a wonderful set of music by extremely skilled young artists. It has warmth, energy, lyricism and much beauty, especially several of the original compositions. Klaus Gesing´s soprano-work stands out, especially his beautiful dark tone and accurate sense of rhythm. There is much promise of things to come from these musicians.'
David Liebman
